The book of Exodus begins with the names of the sons of Israel about 400 years before Moses was born. In fact, “names” (“shemot” in Hebrew) is the Jewish title for this book that ties what happens in it to the covenant God had established through Abraham. This sermon will look at the beginning of the 12 tribes of the people of God as they came to Egypt of which Moses is a descendant (see Exodus 2:1). Not only will we learn about Moses’ literal ancestry, but we will also find ourselves connected to this family through the Abraham covenant and the seed of Abraham, Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:16,26-29).
